Iranian Energy Minister Ali-Akbar Mehrabian announced that Iran will soon initiate electricity exchange with Russia through Azerbaijan, Iranian Students’ News Agency reported on Sunday. The two potential routes for this exchange are via Azerbaijan or via Armenia and Georgia. Mehrabian stated that negotiations for the projects are in their final stages. The Azerbaijan route is seen as less complicated since Iran and Azerbaijan have already synchronized their power networks to the necessary extent.

The exchange of surplus electricity between Iran and Russia can be mutually beneficial, as their peak consumption periods differ (Russia’s in winter and Iran’s in summer). Furthermore, Iran aims to connect its power grid with neighboring countries to ensure a sustainable electricity supply throughout the year. Currently, Iran already exchanges electricity with Iraq, Türkiye, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and it aims to expand such transactions
