Global Leaders Honoured with Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Leadership Award on Mandela Day

2025 Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Awards Thembekile Mandela Foundation
As the world paused to remember Nelson Mandela on July 18, the Thembekile Mandela Foundation honoured his legacy with the inaugural Humanitarian Leadership Awards. Held in Mthatha and led by Ndileka Mandela, the event recognised global leaders whose work continues to advance the principles Madiba held dear.
The awards recognise exemplary individuals whose leadership has advanced humanitarian causes, social equity, and African dignity across political, social, and economic spheres.
“On behalf of the T. Mandela Foundation, I am honored to inform you that you have been selected as a recipient of the inaugural Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award,” read the official message from Ndileka Mandela. “We celebrate your outstanding leadership and enduring commitment to humanitarian principles, social equity, and the advancement of African dignity, demonstrated in your work and in the spirit of the late Nelson Mandela.”
Award Recipients and Their Contributions
H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan (President of Tanzania)
Africa’s first female president currently in office, President Suluhu has championed democratic reforms, women’s empowerment, and pandemic resilience in Tanzania, promoting inclusive governance and education for girls.
H.E. Brice Oligui Nguema (President of Gabon)
As transitional leader, President Nguema has initiated anti-corruption reforms and institutional rebuilding efforts in Gabon, pledging a return to democratic rule and emphasizing national unity.
H.E. John Dramani Mahama (Former President of Ghana)
President Mahama is known for his commitment to peacebuilding, good governance, and youth development across Africa. A respected voice in diplomacy, he has served as an AU election observer and regional mediator.
H.E. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah (Vice President of Namibia)
A lifelong activist and advocate for gender equality, she has played a significant role in Namibia’s liberation and post-independence diplomacy, and is on track to become the country’s first female president.
Sir Mohammed “Mo” Ibrahim (Sudan/UK)
Philanthropist and telecom entrepreneur, Sir Mo Ibrahim founded the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, which supports good governance and leadership in Africa through the Ibrahim Prize and Index of African Governance.
Mr. Steve Harvey (USA)
Renowned entertainer and entrepreneur, Steve Harvey has become a bridge-builder between the U.S. and Africa. Through investment, education, and cultural initiatives, he’s championed Black excellence and economic empowerment on the continent.
Mr. Oweis Zahran (Saudi Arabia)
As a business leader and humanitarian, Oweis Zahran has supported cross-cultural partnerships and philanthropic programs in health, education, and youth development across Africa and the Middle East.
Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam (Former Prime Minister of Mauritius)
A leader in African island diplomacy, Dr. Ramgoolam advanced social welfare, education, and healthcare access during his tenure, contributing to Mauritius’s strong democratic and development record.
Mr. Aliko Dangote, GCON (Nigeria)
Africa’s richest man and industrialist, Aliko Dangote has driven transformative economic development and job creation through his investments in manufacturing and infrastructure, while funding key health and nutrition programs across the continent.
Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman (South Africa)
Founder of Gift of the Givers, Africa’s largest humanitarian relief organization, Dr. Sooliman has led crisis response missions in over 40 countries, delivering food, medical aid, and hope to millions.
Hon. Ronald Lamola (South Africa)
South Africa’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Lamola has stood out for championing constitutional values, access to justice, and efforts toward land reform and social redress.
The awards were presented as part of Nelson Mandela Day celebrations under the theme: “Inspired by Madiba: Taking Action, Making a Difference”. Each honoree exemplifies Mandela’s belief in servant leadership, reconciliation, and the power of human dignity.
The Foundation hopes the awards will become an annual reminder that leadership, when guided by compassion and justice, can shape a more equitable and united world.
