Senator Sylvia Nonhlanhla Mthethwa stands among the most influential African women whose leadership played a significant role in transforming and inspiring other women including young girls to strive for excellence and climb the business and political ladder. She is the most respected women leaders to emerge from the Eswatini with a distinguished career seamlessly bridged business, public service, and socio-economic transformation. Having started her first business at a tender age of six years old, Senator Mthethwa has established herself as a successful entrepreneur with extensive experience in business management, finance, and corporate administration. In 1993, she founded Progress Stationery, which later developed into the Progress Group of Companies, with interests spanning stationery, medical supplies, construction, hospitality, and property investment. Among her notable investments is Ekupholeni Garden Villas, a respected hospitality establishment known for premium accommodation, conferencing, and catering services. Her business leadership was recognised nationally when she received the Businesswoman of the Year Award in 2006. She also serves as a Director and Shareholder of Shoprite Eswatini, contributing to one of the country’s leading retail enterprises.
Sen. Mthethwa’s unignorable prominence in business ushered her into public life. In 2019, she became the first woman appointed by His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini to the Royal Board of Trustees, reflecting the confidence placed in her judgment, integrity, and counsel at the highest levels of national governance. She later became the first woman appointed Regional Administrator/ Governor of the Lubombo Region, one of Eswatini’s four administrative regions, where she oversaw regional development programmes, strengthened local governance, and served as an important link between national policy and community priorities.

Her appointment to the Senate of Eswatini further broadened her public service, providing a national platform from which she has consistently advanced inclusive governance, economic development, and the greater participation of women in leadership. She was subsequently elected by the Senate to serve as part of Eswatini’s five-member delegation to the Pan-African Parliament, where she contributed to continental legislative dialogue and policy development. Her approach combines charity and financial support with mentorship, institutional guidance, and practical business development, enabling communities to build long-term economic independence.
