Entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. David Munowenyu, widely recognised for building one of Zimbabwe’s leading private emergency medical service providers, is expanding his business footprint into the food and hospitality sector in a move that reflects a growing trend among African business leaders towards diversified investments in food security, agriculture-linked value chains, tourism, wellness, and youth empowerment.

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Discovery Ambulance Services is preparing to launch Urban Fork Restaurant, a new hospitality venture located at The Meridian Borrowdale in Harare, Zimbabwe. While the investment enters Zimbabwe’s competitive restaurant industry, analysts note that the move represents more than a hospitality project. It reflects a strategic shift towards sectors closely linked to food systems, agricultural value chains, consumer markets, tourism, and domestic economic growth.

Across Africa, investors are increasingly recognising food and agriculture as critical drivers of sustainable development, employment creation, and economic resilience. The continent’s expanding urban population, growing middle class, and rising demand for locally produced food have created significant opportunities for entrepreneurs willing to invest beyond traditional industries. Earlier this year, Dr. Munowenyu emerged as one of the architects behind U Can Grow Zimbabwe (UCANGROW Zimbabwe), a transformative agricultural initiative designed to transition thousands of smallholder farmers from subsistence production into commercially viable enterprises. The programme, developed in partnership with South African-based agricultural empowerment organisation UCAN and other strategic partners, seeks to integrate farmers into formal value chains through access to markets, financing, technical support, and credit-building mechanisms. Initial phases target between 3,000 and 5,000 farmers, with a long-term vision of reaching more than 100,000 livelihoods nationwide. The initiative is backed by an investment pathway that could ultimately mobilise up to US$1 billion in agricultural financing and rural development capital.

For Dr. Munowenyu, whose business interests have historically centred on healthcare and social impact initiatives, the Urban Fork project signals an evolution towards building integrated enterprises that contribute to broader national development objectives. The restaurant is expected to create employment opportunities for young Zimbabweans while providing practical skills development and entrepreneurial exposure within the hospitality industry.

The forthcoming launch of Urban Fork follows another significant investment milestone achieved by Dr. Munowenyu together with his wife, Chantelle Munowenyu. On 25 April 2026, the couple officially opened Discovery Wellness Spa, expanding their growing portfolio into the wellness and lifestyle sector. The spa launch demonstrated the family’s continued confidence in Zimbabwe’s economy and their commitment to building locally owned enterprises that create jobs while enhancing service offerings in emerging growth industries.

The establishment of both Discovery Wellness Spa and Urban Fork within a short period highlights a broader strategy focused on developing strong Zimbabwean brands capable of competing regionally while contributing to local economic development. Industry observers note that such diversification reflects global trends in which successful entrepreneurs increasingly invest across complementary sectors including healthcare, wellness, hospitality, and food services.

Speaking on the philosophy underpinning his investments, Dr. Munowenyu who moved back to Zimbabwe after living and doing business abroad,  said Zimbabweans must actively participate in shaping the country’s future through entrepreneurship and productive investment.

“We cannot sit back and wait for others to build Zimbabwe for us. As citizens, we have a collective responsibility to invest, innovate and create opportunities that uplift our people and strengthen our economy. President Mnangagwa’s philosophy that Nyika Inovakwa neVene Vayo is more than just a slogan; it is a national call to action for every patriotic Zimbabwean to participate in nation building.”

The new venture is expected to provide a modern lifestyle experience while serving as a practical empowerment model for young Zimbabweans. Beyond creating employment opportunities, Urban Fork aims to support skills transfer, business exposure, and entrepreneurship development among the country’s youth.

Dr. Munowenyu has consistently advocated for business models that balance profitability with social impact, arguing that entrepreneurship should ultimately contribute to improving lives and strengthening communities.

“As entrepreneurs, our mission must go beyond financial success. True leadership is about creating impact, empowering communities and leaving a legacy that inspires future generations. Every investment we make must help transform lives, create jobs and restore confidence in our nation.”

His growing portfolio reflects this philosophy. Through Discovery Ambulance Services, Dr. Munowenyu has earned recognition for complementing Zimbabwe’s healthcare delivery system by expanding emergency medical services and supporting underserved communities. His philanthropic work through the David Munowenyu Foundation has further positioned him among a new generation of African business leaders combining commercial success with community development initiatives.

The expansion into food, hospitality, and wellness comes as Zimbabwe seeks to strengthen domestic production, increase investment, and support value-added industries under the country’s Vision 2030 economic development framework. Economists note that successful restaurant and food-service enterprises often create multiplier effects throughout agricultural supply chains, benefiting farmers, transport operators, food processors, and small-scale producers. Likewise, the wellness sector continues to experience strong growth globally as consumers increasingly prioritise health, self-care, and lifestyle experiences.

Regional development experts argue that Africa’s economic transformation will increasingly depend on entrepreneurs capable of investing across multiple sectors while maintaining strong local roots. In this regard, Munowenyu’s trajectory mirrors a broader continental trend in which business leaders are leveraging success in one industry to unlock opportunities in others.

As Urban Fork prepares to open its doors in Harare, the project stands as another example of private-sector confidence in Zimbabwe’s economic future and highlights the growing role of indigenous entrepreneurs in shaping the country’s development narrative.

For many observers, Dr. David Munowenyu’s latest venture is not merely the opening of a restaurant. Together with the recent launch of Discovery Wellness Spa by Dr. David and Chantelle Munowenyu, it represents a broader vision of building strong Zimbabwean brands that create jobs, stimulate investment, support local value chains, and contribute to the country’s long-term economic transformation.
