In 2020, then-U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Morocco’s claim to the territory in exchange for Morocco reestablishing diplomatic ties with Israel. Algeria cut diplomatic ties with Morocco in 2021, and the two countries have been in a bitter rivalry over Western Sahara for decades. The U.S. State Department spokesperson also reiterated that the U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara remains unchanged.
