Officials Issue Statement Against Fossil Fuels

Government officials from multiple countries including Austria, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Ethiopia, the European Commission, the Federated States of Micronesia, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Senegal, Spain, and the Republic of Vanuatu have issued a joint statement calling for urgent action against climate change.

They emphasize the need to end the use of fossil fuels to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid severe consequences. The officials advocate for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 or earlier, with a significant decrease by 2030. They highlight the importance of transitioning to renewable energy and prioritizing energy efficiency across all sectors while ensuring equitable access to energy.

The statement also stresses the significance of financial support for adaptation and mitigation efforts in developing countries. The officials pledge their commitment to working together to achieve these goals and seek strong outcomes at COP-28, the global climate conference, inviting others to join their efforts in combating climate change.
