Pan-African Parliament Delegation Observes Egypt’s 2023 Presidential Elections
A Pan-African Parliament delegation, led by Hon. Lúcia dos Passos, the 3rd Vice President of the Pan-African Parliament, will be observing the 2023 Presidential Elections in the Arab Republic of Egypt. According to a statement, the initiative is part of the joint African Union Commission (AUC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Election Observation Mission scheduled for December 10th, 11th, and 12th, 2023.
The delegation, which includes African Parliamentarians, are expected to collaborate closely with state authorities, the National Elections Authority, political parties, media representatives, civil society organizations, and members of the international and diplomatic community during their mission. The overarching goal is to ensure a comprehensive and impartial assessment of the electoral process, aligning with democratic principles and international standards.
The AU/COMESA Election Observation Mission is under the guidance of Her Excellency Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, former Vice President of Uganda, and Ambassador John O. Kakonge, a distinguished member of the COMESA Committee of Elders. Their evaluation will be grounded in the legal framework governing elections in Egypt, the OAU/AU Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance (ACDEG), and the International Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation.
