Saharawi Women’s Delegation Engages in Political Empowerment Program at Álava Provincial Council

The Saharawi women's delegation was warmly welcomed by Jone Berriozabal, Deputy for Equality, Euskera, and Governance, Ainhoa Campo, Director of Equality and Human Rights, and the Service for Equality, Cooperation, and Interculturality.

A delegation of Saharawi women, holding significant political and social positions, recently visited the Provincial Council of Álava as part of a political empowerment program coordinated by Euskal Fondoa. The Saharawi women’s delegation was warmly welcomed by Jone Berriozabal, Deputy for Equality, Euskera, and Governance, Ainhoa Campo, Director of Equality and Human Rights, and the Service for Equality, Cooperation, and Interculturality.

During the meeting, the focus was on evaluating the cooperation initiatives led by the Provincial Council of Álava, as well as discussing the current state of the Saharawi conflict, with a specific emphasis on the situation and involvement of Saharawi women in various governmental institutions of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The Saharawi women’s delegation comprises members who hold key positions within Saharawi political institutions and structures, including the Government, the Parliament, the Pan-African Parliament, and the National Union of Saharawi Women. Notably, the representation of women in Saharawi institutions is considerable, with women accounting for 42% of parliamentary seats. Additionally, three out of the five governors of the wilayas are women.
