South African Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has criticized the country’s $8.5 billion climate finance pact, which involves shutting down some coal-fired power plants under the Just Energy Transition Program.

Ramokgopa referred to the closure of state utility Eskom’s Komati Power Station as “an injustice,” claiming that the country removed 1,000 megawatts of energy but only received 217 megawatts of alternative energy. The implementation plan for the pact is yet to be presented, and until then, South Africa cannot access funding from France, Germany, the UK, the US, and the European Union.
