Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) and the Stop the Bleeding Campaign (STB) is participating in the 20th anniversary celebrations of the African Union Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) from July 16 to 20, 2024. This milestone event aims to highlight two decades of citizen engagement and African solidarity, while also reinforcing the role of African citizens in shaping the continent’s development agenda, in line with the forthcoming Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063.

ECOSOCC, as an advisory organ of the African Union (AU), plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between AU Member States and the African populace. It leverages the expertise of civil society organizations (CSOs) and other stakeholders, including the private sector, to influence policy development and implementation.

The commemoration in Accra will gather a diverse audience, including CSOs, representatives from AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), international organizations, development partners, and the African Diaspora.

TJNA’s Contributions

During the event, TJNA will host two significant side sessions:

  1. Financing Health Amidst Rising Taxes and High Debt Burdens
    • Date/Time: Saturday, July 20, 2024, 14:00 – 15:30 GMT
    • Focus: This session will address the challenges of financing health care in Africa despite high debt levels and inadequate revenue collections. It aims to explore sustainable health financing solutions by drawing on case studies, particularly from Ghana, and insights from civil society and multilateral institutions.

  2. TJNA STB Citizens’ Assembly on Debt and Illicit Financial Flows
    • Date/Time: Saturday, July 20, 2024, 15:30 – 17:00 GMT
    • Focus: This session will spotlight Africa’s domestic resource mobilization challenges, particularly the impact of debt and illicit financial flows (IFFs). The Stop the Bleeding Campaign aims to emphasize the importance of reclaiming the social contract and addressing the effects of IFFs on everyday African lives. It will provide a platform for citizens to advocate for a renewed focus on domestic resource mobilization and effective action against IFFs.
