African Union Boss Pledges Support for Pan-African Parliament’s Mandate for Peace, Progress, and Democracy in Africa
Union of Comoros President and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), H.E Azali Assoumani, has pledged support for the Pan-African Parliament, the legislative arm of the AU. Speaking at the opening of the Second Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament in Midrand, South Africa, Assoumani expressed his commitment to work with governments and institutions, including the Pan-African Parliament, for more peace and progress in Africa.
“I will do everything in my power, during my term of office, to provide you with the necessary support and assistance, with a view to achieving your objectives of peace, stability, development and strengthening of democracy and state of human rights, in Africa” _H.E Assoumani.
Urging African legislators to help establish appropriate conditions to promote socio-economic development on the continent, the AU boss said “Our continent is indeed full of many natural resources with the potential to become one of the largest markets in the world in the years to come, if we create, right now, the appropriate conditions, to promote socio-economic development for a sustainable economy”.
Assoumani further emphasized that for Africa to develop and grow, peace and stability must prevail. He expressed his intention to unite the efforts of warring parties and agree on actions to be implemented to reach a ceasefire and favor negotiations for a happy and rapid outcome of the crisis.
The Pan-African Parliament is a platform for African citizens to be heard and represented in the AU. Its mandate includes exercising oversight over the AU organs and institutions, promoting peace, security, and stability on the continent, and advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women.
