The African Union (AU) is hosting a High-Level Event on innovative peace financing mechanisms, focusing on enhancing the private sector’s role in resource mobilization for peace in Africa. Scheduled for today, July 20th, at 17:00hrs UTC, the event will take place at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, Ghana, and will be accessible online at https://bit.ly/3Y6R00U.

The High-Level Event is anchored in the broader vision of Agenda 2063, which aspires for a peaceful, secure, prosperous, integrated, and united Africa. This vision hinges on good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice, and the rule of law as essential conditions for a conflict-free continent. To this end, AU Member States have committed to increasing resource mobilization within the continent and beyond, transforming the AU Peace Fund from a legacy initiative into a revitalized mechanism with sustainable and predictable financing.

Currently, the Peace Fund has amassed over USD 392 million, nearing its initial target of USD 400 million. However, to address the continent’s ongoing peace and security challenges adequately, more resources are needed to ensure predictability, adequacy, and sustainability. This event aims to explore innovative methods for resource mobilization, including voluntary contributions from Member States, the private sector, and high-net-worth individuals.

The event will draw an array of distinguished participants, including Heads of State and Government, representatives from the African Union Commission and its organs, Ministers, African financial institutions, private sector leaders, philanthropists, high-net-worth individuals, and members of regional economic communities and mechanisms. Notable speakers include:

  • H.E Hon. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana
  • H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission
  • H.E Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad
  • Mrs. Dagmawit Moges, Director of the AU Peace Fund Secretariat
  • Officials from various private sector organizations and African financial institutions

The primary objective of the High-Level Event is to gather support from key stakeholders in the private sector, multilateral financial institutions, and high-net-worth individuals. By bolstering the financial standing of the AU Peace Fund, the event seeks to enhance its impact and contribution to peace and stability across Africa.
