Algeria-Zimbabwe Speakers meeting focus on historical brotherhood, friendship
The President and Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Advocate Jacob F.N. Mudenda, was received by the Speaker of the Algerian National Assembly, Senator Salah Goudjil at the National Assembly of Algeria in Algiers on Monday, May 1. Advocate JFN Mudenda is currently on a working visit to Algeria from 29th April to 5th May 2023.
Senator Goudjil, the 90-year-old veteran of Algeria’s struggle for independence against France and second only to the President, organized the meeting to explore the means of strengthening the historic bilateral relations linked by the fight against colonialism, according to a press release from the upper house of Parliament.
According to the same source, the two veterans are working to raise the level of coordination between Zimbabwe and Algeria in order to truly reflect the ties of brotherhood and friendship between the two countries and peoples in accordance with the strategic orientations of the presidents of the two countries, H.E. Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his brother the Zimbabwean president, H.E. Emmerson Mnangagwa.
On the occasion, according to the same source, Sen. Salah Goudjil recalled the doctrine of Algeria since its independence in terms of supporting and complementing liberation movements in Africa and the world;
“In accordance with the principles of the glorious war of November 1st which inspired peoples in search of freedom and independence, like the Sahrawi people whose country is the last colony in Africa. It is also the principle of Algeria in favor of the right of peoples to self-determination and efforts aimed at decolonization in Africa and in the world in accordance with the principles of international legality and United Nations decisions. Which is the case for the Sahrawi cause and the Palestinian cause”.
Sen. Advocate Mudenda welcomed Sen. Goudjil’s remarks saying, “Algeria’s historic support for the independence of Zimbabwe and its support after independence with a view to ensuring its stability and security.” He further reaffirmed the readiness of Zimbabwe to strengthen cooperation and coordination with the North African country in various fields, as well as, to benefit from Algerian skills and expertise, “commensurate with the level of political relations between the two countries, said Senator Mudenda”.
According to the parliamentary press report, two parties agreed to “intensify action to raise the level of parliamentary cooperation through the exchange of visits between the two countries”.
Senator Salah Goudjil further highlighted Algeria’s efforts under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with a view to “activating cooperation mechanisms between African countries based on the principle that Economic independence is the bedrock of political independence and the guarantee of its continuity in the interest of the African peoples to meet their aspirations for rebirth and progress”.
Following Monday’s meeting, the Zimbabwean Speaker met with Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Business and the National Non-Foreign Community, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Ataf at the Ministry’s headquarters on Wednesday, May 3. According to Algerian state media, the meeting was an opportunity to review the relations between Algeria and Zimbabwe, solidarity, and mutual support in trade and development.
