Influenza Outbreak Hits Harare
Health authorities in Harare have issued an urgent alert regarding an ongoing influenza outbreak that is exhibiting unusual symptoms in the affected people. The outbreak, which has been escalating over the past few weeks, is has raised alarm among due to its fatal symptoms particularly in infants.
Cases of vomiting, loss of appetite, dry cough, and yellow diarrhea have been reported in young patients. Meanwhile, adults are experiencing general malaise, characterized by extreme tiredness, cold sweats, dizziness, weakness, and sleepiness. Some adults have also reported bouts of diarrhea.
Health officials recommend the following preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection:
- Remedy: Traditional herbs, organic remedies, and vitamin supplements
- Vaccination: Influenza vaccines are available and are the most effective way to prevent severe illness.
- Hygiene Practices: Regular handwashing with soap and water, using hand sanitizers, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Isolation: Staying at home if symptoms of flu develop to prevent spreading the virus to others.
- Hydration: Ensuring adequate fluid intake, especially for children experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, to prevent dehydration. Dehydration can be remedied by green tea, moringa tea, salt and sugar solution.
Parents and caregivers are advised to monitor their children closely and consult healthcare providers if any symptoms arise. People living with other health conditions are most vulnerable and this influenza may be fatal in some patients. Children and vulnerable people are encouraged to take precaution.
