Zimbabwe: New parliamentary monitoring group names committee heads
The African Parliamentary Press Network(APPN) Zimbabwe Caucus has announced the establishment of its committees tasked with strengthening the operations enshrined in the APPN Regulatory Framework. The APPN caucus was launched in 2022 with the aim of developing networks for increased engagement between civil society, the Parliament of Zimbabwe, and the Pan-African Parliament. Its parent organization, Parliamentary Network Africa, is a parliamentary monitoring civil society organization promoting open parliament across Africa.
The creation of the committees followed the APPN Zimbabwe Caucus’ executive’s engagement with private and public media players in Zimbabwe and membership recruitment. The creation of the committees followed the appointment of committee heads, mirroring the respective committees in the national parliament and the Pan-African Parliament. As of 4 April 2023, the committees will start operations under the leadership of the following media practitioners:
Mobilization and Finance: Sibhekisipho Fayayo
Training and Development: Khumbulani N Whande
External Affairs and Engagements: Modester Kamupinda
Domestic Affairs and Engagements: Valentine Maponga
Director of Implementation: George Maponga
Communications Officer: Sharon Munjenjema
The Africa Parliamentary Press Network of African media practitioners was established against the background of the need to raise awareness about the importance of transparency and accountability in the operations of domestic and regional parliaments in Africa, as well as, addressing gaps and challenges relating to civil society engagement with the Pan-African Parliament.
