Russia Imposes Soviet-Style Restrictions on British Diplomats Amid Tensions with the West

Russia on Thursday imposed Soviet-style restrictions on British diplomats in Moscow, requiring them to provide five working days’ notice of any travel plans beyond a 120-km radius due to what Russia described as London’s “hostile actions.” The move comes in response to the West’s support for Ukraine and its imposition of stringent economic sanctions on Russia since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The restrictions mark the toughest constraints on British diplomats in Moscow since Soviet times when foreign travel was severely limited and closely monitored by the KGB. Diplomatic postings in Moscow are now considered among the most difficult in the world due to intrusive surveillance and harassment faced by diplomats. The Foreign Office and Britain’s embassy in Moscow have declined to comment on the matter.
