Tunisia has successfully contained the wildfires that spread across several regions in the country, as of Wednesday.
The fires, which originated in Algeria and resulted in 34 fatalities, including 10 soldiers, extended to Tunisian areas, including forests in Tabarka, Jendouba, Beja, Bizerte, and Siliana. The Tunisian authorities received assistance from the Algerian army and firefighting planes from Spain in tackling the blazes. The wildfires led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents amid a heatwave affecting North Africa and southern Europe, with temperatures reaching 49 degrees Celsius (120 Fahrenheit) in some Tunisian cities. Thankfully, no loss of life was reported in Tunisia, and the 600 evacuated residents have returned to their homes.
The President of the Arab Parliament, Mr. Adel Ben Abd al-Rahman al-Asoumi, has extended his sincere condolences and sympathy to Algeria, its leadership, government, parliament, and people for the victims of the recent forest fires. The Arab Parliament expresses full solidarity with Algeria during this difficult time and believes in Algeria’s strength to overcome this tragedy. Prayers are offered for the victims’ souls and for a speedy recovery for the injured.
The Pan-African Parliament President, Chief Fortune Charumbira, also extended his condolences not only to Mr. Boughali but also to the families of the victims, the citizens, and the members of the People’s National Army (ANP). He conveyed the deep sympathy of both himself and all the PAP MPs, expressing solidarity with wildfire victims during this ordeal.
