With the aim of harnessing the potential of Africa’s youth in the successful implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the AfCFTA Secretariat, in collaboration with UPSA Law School, the Independent Continental Youth Advisory Council on AfCFTA (ICOYACA), and UNECA, is set to launch the AfCFTA Moot Court Competition. The event aims not only to raise awareness among the youth about the AfCFTA Legal Framework but also to enhance their capacity in International Trade Law and the Dispute Settlement Process under the Agreement.
The brainchild of the AfCFTA Youth Advisory Council, led by His Excellency Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the AfCFTA, the competition seeks to create a cadre of skilled trade lawyers who can provide crucial support to AfCFTA countries in navigating potential disputes. The rigorous standards of the moot court competition involve legal drafting of written submissions, rules of argument and evidence, and utilization of case law, mirroring a legal faculty Olympics.
Scheduled for December 8, 2023, the launch event will take place alongside the AfCFTA Women in Trade Conference at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Center in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania. The competition offers a unique platform for law students across Africa and the Diaspora to engage, learn, and actively contribute to shaping the continent’s trade future.
