South Africa Abides by ICC Warrant, President Cyril Ramaphosa Won’t Host Vladimir Putin at BRICS Summit

South Africa Abides by ICC Warrant

After failing to find ways to bypass the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Pretoria has finally decided to comply with the decision to avoid any diplomatic tension. President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa announced through a simple statement that he will not be able to host his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during the BRICS summit scheduled from August 22 to 24 in Johannesburg.

President Lula da Silva of Brazil is also considering to withdraw from the Summit, it is reported.

Despite South Africa’s refusal to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it will have to respect the ICC arrest warrant against Putin for the war crime of “deportation” of Ukrainian children. The BRICS group comprises South Africa, Brazil, China, India, and Russia, and Putin will be represented by his Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov.
