The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced the commencement of the 2024 edition of the SADC Tertiary Institution Essay Competition, inviting entries from active tertiary institution students across its member states. This annual competition aims to acknowledge the contributions of SADC’s founders and assess the regional integration agenda.

This year’s essay topic is “What in your opinion has SADC achieved since its formation; and does it reflect the vision of its founders?” Participants are encouraged to critically analyze the accomplishments of SADC since its inception and evaluate how well these align with the initial vision set by the organization’s founders.

Coordinated by the Ministries of Education in respective SADC member states, government officials will submit the top three essays to the SADC Secretariat for regional adjudication. At the regional level, the 1st prize winner will be awarded USD2000, the 2nd prize winner USD1500, and the 3rd prize winner USD1000. Additionally, the top 10 winners will receive certificates signed by the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security.

While national winners will not receive monetary rewards, the top three essays from each member state will be recognized with certificates of achievement. The competition serves as a platform for young minds to engage with the history and progress of SADC, fostering a deeper understanding of regional integration efforts. Submissions are eagerly awaited, as the competition promises to stimulate thoughtful reflections on the achievements and vision of SADC.
