Tanzania Takes Over Leadership of SADC’s Defence and Security Organ at 44th Summit
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced a leadership rotation for its Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation from Zambia to Tanzania. This transition was formalized at the 44th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, which commenced on 17 August 2024 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Her Excellency Samia Hassan Suluhu, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, has officially assumed the role of Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, succeeding His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia. President Hassan’s leadership is anticipated to further the Organ’s mandate of enhancing intelligence sharing, strengthening border security, and promoting conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
The SADC Summit, the policy-making institution of the Community, is responsible for the overall policy direction and control of its functions.
