South African Women Secure Spot in FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with Victory Over Italy
The South African women’s national soccer team secured a place in the round of sixteen at the 2023 FIFA World Cup for Women by defeating Italy 3-2 in the final group stage match. The victory allowed South Africa to advance to the knockout stage alongside Sweden. In the same group, Sweden emerged as the leader with a perfect score of nine points. In the match against Italy, Ariana Caruso scored an early goal for Italy, but South Africa quickly equalized with an own goal by Benedetta Orsi. South Africa took the lead in the second half with a goal by Hilda Magia, followed by another equalizer from Italy’s Ariana Caruso. In the final moments of the game, Thembi Kagatlana scored the winning goal for South Africa, securing their spot in the next round. Meanwhile, Sweden defeated Argentina 2-0, with goals from Rebecca Blomkvist and Elaine Robinson (penalty kick).
The upcoming round of sixteen will see Sweden facing the defending champions, the United States, while South Africa will take on the Netherlands. The tournament is currently being held in Australia and New Zealand.
